The Scholarship Halls at the University of Kansas are a tightly-knit community comprising 12 halls of about 50 residents each - 6 male halls and 6 female halls. The "scholarship" in the name comes from the fact that residents pay a lower fee for room and board (than in other on-campus locations) in return for collectively taking care of the upkeep of their individual halls. They clean, cook meals and run the in-hall administration by themselves, thereby learning to be self-sufficient individuals in a communal space.

How Composting Currently works in the Schol Halls :
-
Food scraps (both cooked and uncooked) get thrown in the compost bin in the kitchen.
-
The bins are lined with ENVISION ASTM 6400 compostable bags.
-
-
The bags are then taken to a dumpster in the alley behind the building.
-
The dumpsters are emptied into vehicles belonging to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.
